Mendocino in NorCal
I centered in on some slow photography at the coast last week only to come home to a busy long list of must do’s. The gates are starting to open right on the anniversary of our lockdown. So slow and fast are starting a tugawar on my brain. How can I pull the reins on my horses instead of running over them on my way out the gate? How can I keep the best parts of covid’s slowness and make it last?
I’ve been taking the slowed time to do a study on prayer, and one of the highlights for me so far has been from 1Chronicles 16:11, “seeking God’s face”. I’ve tried to think more deeply about what this means. One thing for sure, it takes time. If I’m seeking his face, I need to be with him, sitting with him, kneeling before him, close in his presence. You can read a lot in a face. If you look closely at someone, you can see character, personality, heart, desire, mood… The more we look into God’s face, the more we get to know him. And the more I know him, the more I find faith. So often when I come to him in prayer, I have things to ask him for, and he wants me to ask. But the more I seek his face, the more I want him and his presence more than any other thing he can give me. But it takes time. Like sitting on Seaside Beach and slowing down the raging waves to a gentle swirl.
